What is a crown ? When I need it ?

A crown, or cap, is a custom-made dental restoration which protects the underlying tooth. You may need a crown because of:

Extensive tooth decay
Large metal or tooth-colored fillings that weaken the remaining tooth
Broken or cracked teeth
A tooth that has had root canal therapy
A misaligned or misshaped tooth
Teeth that have large fillings that are breaking down and cannot be refilled

All-Porcelain Crowns

Crowns can be made out of porcelain, metal (a gold or other metal alloy), or a combination of both.

Bridges

What is a dental bridge ?

A dental bridge is a device used to fill the space where a tooth has been removed.

A bridge may be an option to replace a missing tooth or several teeth. It uses one or more teeth on either side of the bridge as an anchor. The existing teeth are reshaped to have crowns placed over them and one or more false teeth are cemented between the two crowns. The whole bridge piece is then cemented into place.

Unlike a partial denture, you can't remove a bridge to clean it, but there are special cleaning aids available to keep the area around and under the bridge clean.

Why a Bridge?
